WHAT CASES ARE WE ACCEPTING?
We are accepting cases involving polypropylene mesh products including:
Physiomesh - made by Ethicon a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. On May 25, 2016, Ethicon instructed doctors to no longer use this product
C-QUR - (pronounced 'secure') made by Atrium Medical Corporation, and
Ventralex - made by Davol a subsidiary of Bard.
WHAT IS THIS MESH AND WHY IS IT USED?
These mesh products are used to repair hernias. A hernia is the opening in a muscle or connective tissue which allows an organ such as the intestine, colon, bladder or fatty tissue to squeeze through the opening.
These products are also used to reconstruct the chest wall and repair other traumatic or surgical wounds.
WHAT CAN GO WRONG WITH HERNIA - SURGICAL MESH?
The mesh can fail in a number of ways. The mesh can tear, migrate, shrink, or become twisted. The Physiomesh, C-QUR and Ventralex meshes are made of a synthetic plastic called polypropylene which can fail inside the body or come into contact with and damage organs and other soft tissues.
Some of these mesh products were coated in a gel made of Omega 3 fatty acids and triglicerides. The coating can cause a allergic reaction leading to inflammation, infection, and severe pain. It can also separate from the mesh.
HERNIA SURGICAL MESH INJURIES:
These failures can result in bowel perforation, other organ damage, bowel obstructions, recurrence or worsening of the hernia, foreign body response, and painful adhesions.
Patients who have an Omega 3 coated mesh also have experienced a painful rash and/or separation of the coating from the mesh. The coating can then migrate and attach or otherwise injure internal organs and soft tissues.
These failures can require additional surgeries. The injuries cannot always be corrected. Sadly, some patients will never fully recover. Some have died as a result of a mesh failure.
