WHAT IS THIS MEDICAL DEVICE AND WHY IS IT USED?
IVC stands for Inferior Vena Cava, which is a large vein that carries blood from the lower body to the heart.  An IVC filter is a metal device that looks much like a spider with a small body and very long legs.  The product is marketed as a preventive measure to be used by patients who are at a high risk for a pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lung). The device is surgically placed within the patient’s IVC vein to stop blood clots that develop in the lower body before they can reach the lungs, heart or brains of the patient, and is designed with the intention that it be retrieved at a later date.

WHAT CAN GO WRONG?
The device can fail in a number of ways, including:

  • Migration - the device can move to another place in the body such as the patient’s arteries, heart, lungs and kidneys
  • Fracture – the device can fracture sending pieces to other parts of the body
  • Perforation – the spider-like legs puncture and perforate veins, arteries ,heart, lungs or kidneys
  • Tilt - the device can tilt and become lodged so that it cannot be removed in the manner intended
  • Fail - failure can result in the pulmonary embolism the device was intended to prevent.

INJURIES CAUSED BY RETRIEVABLE IVC FILTERS:

  • Death
  • Hemorrhaging - internal bleeding
  • Stroke
  • Embolism
  • Perforations– the spider-like legs or fractured pieces of the device can perforate veins, arteries, heart, lungs or kidneys
  • Requiring open heart or open abdominal surgery to remove the device

 SYMPTOMS OF THESE INJURIES:

  • Chest pain
  • Heart rhythm disturbances
  • Unusually low blood pressure
  • Nausea
  • Neck pain
  • Shortness of breath, lightheadedness, confusion
  • Hemorrhage (internal bleeding)
